WADE HENDERSON

Wade Henderson is the Director of the Washington Bureau of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Mr. Henderson directs the government affairs and national legislative program of the NAACP.

Mr. Henderson represents the NAACP as a legislative director and lobbyist on a wide range of civil rights and human rights issues. He works principally in the areas of civil rights enforcement; economic and political empowerment for African Americans; criminal justice reform; education; and fair housing policy. He also oversees the NAACP's work in the area of federal and judicial appointments. Mr. Henderson was the NAACP's lobbyist on the Civil Rights Act of 1991, the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, and the Brady Handgun Prevention Act.

Presently, he is the NAACP national advocate in the Affirmative Action debate; and he also has been asked to oversee a new National Voter Empowerment Program.

Mr. Henderson was previously the Associate Director of the Washington national office of the American Civil Liberties Union, where he represented the ACLU as a legislative counsel and lobbyist on a wide range of civil rights and civil liberties issues.

Prior to his role with the ACLU, Mr. Henderson served as Executive Director of the Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO); and as an Assistant Dean and Director of the Minority Student Program at Rutgers University School of Law. He is a member of the Bar in the District of Columbia, New Jersey, and the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. Henderson is a native Washingtonian, and attended public schools in the District of Columbia. He is a graduate of Howard University and the Rutgers University School of Law, where he was the recipient of the"J. Skelly Wright Award" for his accomplishments in civil rights advocacy. He is also the recipient of the 1992 "Fannie Bear Besser Award in Public Service." He is author of numerous articles on civil rights issues and public policy.
