Anybody can buy
a toaster or set of glasses as a wedding gift, but how about giving
something which reflects our African-American culture. Below is a
list of affordable gift ideas. If you have suggestions to add, e-mail
us and we'll add them to the list.
- A set
of picture frames in various sizes, lined with African fabric.
If you can't locate one at a specialty shop near you. Consider
buying a small amount of material and having a seamstress do the
job for you.
- Gift
certificate to a Black-owned restaurant or establishment.
This is a nice idea because it's a perfect opportunity to support
our own.
- Kinara
for celebrating Kwanzaa.
Kinara's are not only used at Kwanzaa time, but they're attractive
and meaningful year-round. If the couple is not familiar with
Kwanzaa. Consider purchasing a book about it too.
- Gift
set of Afrocentric stationary. Make sure the set includes
a nice variety of elements: notecards, plain paper, envelopes,
thank you cards perhaps.
- Magazine
subscription to a Black magazine. Again, this is an opportunity
to support our own. Consider the couple's interests and lifestyle
before deciding on which one. You may want to buy two different
subscription for the queen and king.
- Black
art. (Note: We recommend you try this only if you know the
couple's taste well) Perhaps you know a gallery which sells gift
certificates.
- Table
cloth made of African fabric with a set of candles.
- Coffee
table book featuring African Americans or something relating
to black culture.
- Book
of African folktales or proverbs the couple can read together.
