Bridal Do's

Your bridal hairstyle is a key element of your entire look on your wedding day. Whether you are wearing a veil, a jewel-encrusted headband, or a matching head wrap (which you may abandon for the reception) for your African wedding gown, your ‘do is an important part of your presentation as a bride.

African-American brides have a myriad of options, from updos and French rolls to crowning braids and tiny twists. Selecting the right style to fit and complement a gown and veil or other headwear can be difficult, but not impossible.

Trevia Meyers of Sistah Hair Care in Columbia, MD has styled the hair of dozens of brides. She says that for those who are wearing simple veils or tiaras, an updo is the best style for shoulder-length to long hair, but it also depends on neckline of the gown. If it is a strapless gown, off the shoulder, or décolletage, a swept up hairstyle is the best option to show off the bride’s shoulders or graceful neck. One option is a neat bun with loose tendrils on the sides, or perhaps a hairpiece for shorter hair. Another is to loosely pile hair on top of the head, securing it with small clips, and adding the veil or tiara. For longer, fuller veils and gowns with high necklines, wear long hair down in soft waves or curls.

If your hair is short, accent it with tiny silk flowers that match your gown. Don’t overdo it on flower size or the number you put in your hair, it might take attention away from your glowing face.

For those who choose to wear African attire for the ceremony, which may include a matching head wrap or hat, more than likely your hair will be out of view. But if you plan to take off your headpiece during the reception, make sure your hair is styled in a simple style that won’t be out of place when you remove your wrap. A tight French or low roll or twist set with styling gel will keep your ‘do in place.

Braids are always a practical, no touch-ups required style, and many brides opt for a braided coiffure to celebrate their heritage on their wedding day. Braids can be worn up as well to accommodate a veil and low neckline.
